The Customer
Small businesses typically archive and backup their data internally, using a person who may or may not have the necessary expertise or time to ensure that the backups are performed adequately or on a recurring and timely basis. An option commonly used by larger companies is to contract data backup companies to periodically maintain and archive their data, and store it offsite on tape media. Our experience has indicated that small businesses do not regularly perform data backups; instead, individual employees backup their computers with irregularity. Mission Backup sees small businesses as an excellent target market for a subscription-based, online backup solution. Medium to large businesses usually have a better grasp of the necessity of regularly backing up critical data. Most have an Information Systems or Information Technology (IS or IT) department that performs backups as part of their overall function of maintaining the company's computer networking infrastructure. These backups are typically done in-house with the tapes either stored onsite (often in fireproof vaults) or offsite for protection in case of catastrophic fire or other disaster. Companies providing onsite backups, offsite storage and other services are viable options for these businesses. Mid to large-size businesses typically are more likely to use T1 or DSL for Internet connectivity, thereby making them more attractive candidates for online backups via Internet connections. The potential security and cost savings advantages realized by relieving IT personnel of this task, or saving the expense of hiring an offsite service makes online backups an attractive alternative for this market.
Concerns & Expectations As described, clients are concerned about security issues and have expectations that their data will be confidentially stored and available to them quickly should a mishap occur on their premises and critical data is lost. They also expect that all service will be easy to use and adaptable to their specific program and needs. Finally, the pricing structure for their needs must result in significant short-term andlong-term savings versus their present backup means. |
